Consider this a dare for long-term couples who are fans of scary movies: Get comfortable with your significant other and view Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its streaming debut via Hulu. On the surface, it may seem like standard physical horror, but within Together resides a deep meditation about the ways we decide to love one another.
A Debut Feature Exploring Partnership Complexities
Together marks the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for over ten years. Having wed in real life in 2017, the two stars contribute a special spark to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.
The story begins when Tim and Millie transition from the urban environment to the country for professional reasons. A familiar plot device, admittedly, but that’s largely where the conventions end. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.
A Supernatural Catalyst
While walking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and the two discover an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity starts to affect the pair. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.
The entire film is a slow burn horror experience, weaving in moments of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). The director weaves these elements together seamlessly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting aura of dread.
Layered Performances
A significant portion of Together is only the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is waning due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.
Conversely, Tim feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and far away from his network of friends. He is terrified of the concept of totally forfeiting his individual identity in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for transportation.
The director's cleverest decision in this movie refrains from painting one partner or the other the obvious villain.
Both characters face the kind of problems that come with most partnerships over a long period. Fundamentally, they have affection for one another. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent current of uncertainty about their bond.
Allegory and Meaning
While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of codependency and fully committing to a partner, the metaphor avoids being overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other symbiotically.
A Debated Finale
Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, some couples having disagreements found that the film actually helped them reconcile.
If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the finale plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply look at your significant other and say, “I understand that choice”?
No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can undertake today.
